|---|
| Dupage and Quincy split a doubleheader Tuesday night in Lisle. The Dragons won the opener 2-1 in extra innings, and the Gems bounced back to take the second game 5-3.
A pair of lefties made for a solid pitcher's duel in the first, as Tom Zelasko of the Dragons and Greg Hellhake of the Gems put together strong outings to keep their teams in the game. Each allowed a single run, with Zelasko going a full seven and Hellhake lasting five and a third. With the two teams knotted at one after the regulation seven innings, Andrew Estes pitched a scoreless top of the 8th to give the Dragons a chance to pick up the win, which they did on a Jordan Tokarz RBI bloop single down the right field line. Justin Wilson had a pair of hits in contest and score on the Tokarz hit. The Gems jumped on Dragons starter Andrew Beatty in the second game to the tune of four runs by the middle of the fourth to jump out to the early lead. Just as it appeared the Dragons would make things interesting with a three-run sixth inning rally, Jon Myers belted his league-leading 14th home run of the summer to put the nail in the coffin and Kevin Lee, who'd quelled the rally an inning before, polished things off with a perfect seventh. Myers went 3-4 with three driven in to lead the Quincy attack. |

Sunday, August 3, 2008Quincy Gems' Myers Creeping Up on Home Run Record |
|---|
| With his 13th round-tripper of the season Saturday night, Quincy Gems' Jon Myers has hit more home runs than two entire teams this summer in the CICL.
Since the creation of the CICL in 1963, only four players have hit more than 13 home runs in a season, with the last being Twin City's Frank Mustari, who hit 14 in 1986 when teams used aluminum bats. Springfield's Loren White holds the CICL record with 20 in 1984, also using aluminum bats. The wood bat record is 17, set by Jim Cox of the Bloomington Bobcats in 1971. Cox later played with the Montreal Expos from 1973-76. The league used wood bats from 1963-1974, aluminum from 1975-1989, and wood again since 1990. Myers' next homer, his 14th, will tie him for 3rd on the all-time list with Kelvin Moore (Peoria, 1977), who later played for the Oakland Athletics 1981-83, and the aforementioned Mustari. His 13 home runs are tied with a couple of other players who went on to play in the Major Leagues, Joe Hague (Galesburg, 1965), who played with the Cardinals and Reds from 1968-73, and Karl Pagel (Charleston-Mattoon, 1974), who played with the Cubs and Indians from 1978-83. The Gems have 6 remaining regular season games. |

Dubois County rallied with two outs in the ninth and after being issued a pair of walks, took the lead on a two run double by Russ Fink. The Gems put the tying run on base when Justin Dunning ripped a one out single up the middle and had the go ahead runner, Kenny Burns, reach on a walk. |

|---|
| A press conference was held today at Y-Mens Pavilion in downtown Hannibal to announce the team name, logo and mascots for the newest collegiate wood bat league franchise in the Central Illinois Collegiate League (CICL), giving Samuel Clemens Field its first taste of organized baseball in 54 years.
The new name for the Hannibal Baseball Group will be Hannibal Cavemen, a nod to the immensely popular tourist caves in the city and their historical tie to Mark Twain. The team logo was displayed on hats and T-shirts, combining the dual usage meaning of Hannibal Cavemen using a picture of an early caveman squeezing a baseball with his club next the team name. Two team mascots were also unveiled, one tying the amateur baseball to the caving tradition of the city. Rascal, a spelunking raccoon with a tool belt of caving tools and head lamp, will also go out on educational campaigns to school and community events as an ambassador to the Hannibal Cavemen and to promote caving safety. The second mascot, a barefoot traditional caricature of early cavemen, is Shoo-less Joe, a tongue-in-cheek reference to both the new name and a baseball icon. A Name the Team Contest recently held to select the new name for Hannibal Baseball had hundreds of entrants both locally and nationally submitting ideas. The winner, Darren Smith of Hannibal, Missouri was credited and received two season tickets to the inaugural 2009 season. “The new Hannibal Cavemen name is one of a kind. With some of the finest caves in the world right here in Hannibal, we believe it is a perfect fit for promoting the area and a fun team name. It’s exciting to think new fans of the Hannibal Cavemen will want to take home novelties with this new logo and name, providing additional promotion of Hannibal, its caves and baseball at historical Clemens Field.” said Bob Hemond, Hannibal Baseball Group co-founder who hosted the press conference The unveiling of Hannibal Baseball Group’s new name kicked off the local Y-Mens Club 29th Annual Mud Volleyball Tournament fundraiser. The two groups joined together for the weekend event to highlight and raise money for recently flooded Hannibal during the 2008 Midwest Floods. The Hannibal Cavemen will have a booth up during the entire event selling new logo merchandise, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Y-Mens Club in joint philanthropic efforts to give back to the Hannibal community. “I love how this team and mascots incorporate some of the best aspects of our existing tourism and entertainment. I look forward to seeing Joe crushing not only the ball but also the competition. I look forward to all the fun we are going to have at the newly renovated historic Clemens Field next spring,” said Mayor Roy Hark who was present at the Press Conference. Hannibal Baseball Group recently won approval in the CICL. They have joined together with the City of Hannibal, county of Marion and the state of Missouri in a revitalization effort of historic downtown Hannibal. Beginning in June of 2009 and running until August, home games will be played at Clemens Field with collegiate players not compensated due to NCAA restrictions. Currently, the Hannibal Baseball Operations Director is working with college coaches and scouts to assemble a team roster. |
